WDMA Releases 2022 U.S. Industry Market Study [Unpublished]

The Window & Door Manufacturers Association (WDMA) has released the WDMA 2022 U.S. Market Study for Window & Patio Door, Entry Doors and Architectural Doors. This study is designed to define the historical, current and forecasted size of the industry market. The report is based on direct industry input for product shipments in 2021 and combined with other primary and secondary research to benchmark the results. The Farnsworth Group, a nationally recognized market research expert, conducted the surveys, analyzed the data and prepared the report.

The 2022 market study report includes an analysis of the attitudinal drivers of homeowners and contractors, key macro drivers in the residential and commercial markets and a special section to gauge overall shipment demand sentiment and expectations to understand the current and expected challenges for the industry. This report delivers timely information on residential/light commercial window, patio door, residential entry door and interior architectural door market trends and product relationships; regional data, historic data from 2019 to 2020, and forecast data for 2022 through 2024.

Quick facts and key takeaways:

  • Residential window and door shipments increased in 2021 despite supply chain issues and labor shortages. Residential unit shipments (windows, patio and entry doors) were up 3.8% or 2.5 million units from 2020.
  • Key drivers remain positive for the future; however, plateau in the second half of 2022. Increased home values are expected to drive more large-scale remodeling. Housing affordability, although the lowest in the past decade, remains above historical norms.
  • For 2023 and 2024, concerns arise around consumer and builder confidence. As the Federal Reserve tackles inflation, interest rates could affect spending on new homes and large remodels.
  • We forecast the 2023 and 2024 window market to expand, however at a slower pace. Most categories expect a slowdown, particularly in 2023-2024, with units shipped expected to grow 1-2% in the coming years.

Along with shipments and forecasting information, the study also presents national and divisional data and detailed product data for the housing stock, new projects, and non-residential construction to provide additional insights into the health of the construction industry as a whole.

The complete study is available for purchase online in the WDMA online store in the Statistical Reports section for non-members. Individual market segments of the 2022 U.S. Market Study related specifically to residential windows, residential patio and entry doors and architectural doors are also available for purchase separately.
