The Harris Poll Report: Trends Shaping our Future

Speaker: John Gerzema, CEO of Harris Insights & Analytics/The Harris Poll

Co-working and co-living spaces; a single apartment lease that lets gig workers to live anywhere in the world; office furniture that retracts into the ceiling at 6pm to reinforce work/life balance. These are but a few of the small forces creating dynamic change in our homes, offices, stores and other physical environments. Today, commercial and residential design, construction and remodeling must adapt to new Millennial and Gen Z values and habits. Modern retail is designed for both frictionless shopping and immersive experience. Today’s homes are built for cross-generational living and often furniture is leased like a dress from Rent The Runway. To envision how to design tomorrow’s windows and doors requires first understanding how we will live and work today.

John Gerzema, TED talker and trend expert leads social sciences team that tracks trends all over the world. John’s team uses ethnographies, influencer salons and longitudinal surveys to help companies spot the next big thing. As CEO of The Harris Poll, one of the most respected sources of public opinion, John Gerzema oversees the pulse of the American society to help businesses understand and adapt to constant change. This talk will unpack trends in living, working, shopping and convening to bring practical insight and application to WDMA’s members.

Countdown to Teamwork

Speaker: Col. Mike Mullane (ret.), former NASA Space Shuttle Astronaut

Col. Mike Mullane will use the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster as an example of how a World-Class team can be victimized by incremental deviances from teamwork, leadership and safety best practices. Challenger proved to be a ‘predictable surprise’. Col. Mullane will also cover the harrowing story of when he was a Weapons System Operator from the backseat of the reconnaissance version of the F-4 Phantom jet fighter but making his first flight in a swing-wing, supersonic F-111 jet.  Ultimately, he and the pilot had to make a last second ejection from the crashing jet. This crash was due to crew error…including Mullane’s failure to speak up at a critical moment in the flight. Throughout this presentation responsibility & accountability, normalization of deviance and how to set challenging, but attainable goals will be threaded in the stories told.
