WDMA Releases 2020 U.S. Industry Market Study

Posted By Window and Door Manufacturers Association, Monday, June 15, 2020

[Washington] The Window & Door Manufacturers Association (WDMA) has released the WDMA 2020 U.S. Industry Market Study. This report provides data and insights needed to understand the industry's performance, key trends, and future direction. The report is based on extensive industry input for product shipments in 2019 and was prepared, researched and analyzed by The Farnsworth Group. In addition to analyzing the member surveys, the Farnsworth Group also conducted additional research by surveying professional contractors and primary channel retailers into the number of units shipped and installed.

New to the 2020 market study, the report includes an analysis of the attitudinal drivers of homeowners and contractors, key macro drivers in the residential and commercial markets and an update on COVID-19 and the impact it has had on new construction and the remodeling market place. This report delivers timely information on residential/light commercial window, patio door, residential entry door and interior architectural door market trends and product relationships; regional data, historic data from 2017 to 2018, and forecast data for 2020 through 2022.

Quick facts and key takeaways:

  • Total residential units shipped (windows, patio doors, entry doors) totaled nearly 65 million units shipped in 2019. This is up from 63.3 million in 2018.
  • Total commercial units shipped (architectural doors and commercial built windows) totaled just over 4.3 million units shipped nearly identical to the 4.33 units shipped in 2018.
  • Window shipments saw moderate growth in 2019 whereas patio doors grew significantly. Entry doors saw a slight decrease in 2019.
  • For the near term forecast, COVID-19 pandemic is affecting the window and door industry through rising unemployment, diminished consumer and contractor confidence, and decreased housing starts, among many other factors.

Along with shipments and forecasting information, the study also presents topline national and divisional data and detailed product data for the housing stock, new projects, and non-residential construction to enable insights into the industry.

The complete study is available for purchase online in the WDMA online store in the Statistical Reports section for non-members. Individual market segments of the 2020 U.S. Market Study related specifically to windows/patio doors, entry doors and architectural doors are also available for purchase separately.
