COVID-19 Legislation Enacted

Posted By Window and Door Manufacturers Association, Thursday, March 19, 2020

As the situation surrounding COVID-19 (coronavirus) continues to evolve, WDMA is committed to ensuring members have the most up-to-date information on legislation and regulations considered by the federal government that impact employers and employees including what the requirements could be for businesses across the U.S.

Last Saturday, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 6201, the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which provides economic relief to individuals impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak. Earlier today, the Senate passed H.R. 6201 and the bill will soon be signed into law by President Trump.

Among the provisions relevant to WDMA members, H.R. 6201 requires businesses with fewer than 500 employees and government employers to provide qualified employees with two-weeks of paid sick leave. Each quarter, businesses subject to the requirement are entitled to a fully refundable tax credit equal to 100% of the qualified sick leave wages paid by the employer.

In addition, the legislation mandates businesses with fewer than 500 employees and government employers to provide qualified employees up to 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave. Each quarter, businesses will be entitled to a fully refundable tax credit equal to 100% of the qualified paid family leave wages paid by the employer.

For a more detailed legislative analysis of H.R. 6201, including which employees qualify for the new paid sick and family leave benefits, WDMA members may click here.

In the near future, Congress is expected to draft a major stimulus package which will provide economic relief to businesses impacted by the COVID-19.  WDMA will provide more information to members as those details become available.
