The major "green” building programs are neutral on the use of aluminum in window products. The focus is on performance rather than material with emphasis on: Life Cycle Analysis. All credits/points are based on Energy Star requirements and in some cases extra credits/points can be earned by exceeding the Energy Star requirements.


  • No material bias against aluminum.
  • Energy Star requirement for credits. Extra credits for surpassing Energy Star standards.
  • LEED Technical and Scientific Advisory Committee (TSAC) states: "Aluminum framed windows had the worst energy efficiency compared to wood and PVC”.
